An alumnus of Drexel University with a master of business administration in accounting, Larry Wittig works as a Certified Public Accountant in Tamaqua, Pennsylvania. A dedicated civic leader, Larry Wittig has served on the boards of nonprofit organizations. This includes a previous position as the chairman of the Luzerne/Schuylkill Workforce Investment Board, Inc. (L/S WIB).
The L/S WIB aims to solve local workforce challenges and increase economic opportunity by creating partnerships with business, education, economic, and industry leaders. In addition to organizing a variety of apprenticeship programs, internships, and other employment opportunities, the L/S WIB funds the federal On-the-Job Training (OJT) Program. A free, federally-funded program, the OJT offers qualified employers reimbursement for training new employees. These are paid over the course of six months and cover a certain percentage of a new hiree’s wages. OJT funds can be used when the company is hiring for regular positions among the High Priority Occupation list that offer a minimum of 32 hours per week and rate of pay of $10.00 per hour.

The Tamaqua Area School District is a public school district located in Eastern Pennsylvania and is home to many exceptional teachers. Among them is Michele Bittner, a teacher at West Penn Elementary School, who was named a finalist for the 2020 Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year award. A fifth-grade English teacher, Ms. Bittner is one of 12 finalists from the state and one of four finalists from the local region. Nominations for the PA Teacher of the Year Award can be submitted by students, parents, peers, or community members who want to honor exceptional educators for their dedicated work in the classroom. A lifelong resident of Tamaqua, Ms. Bittner said she takes great pride in representing her hometown and educating students in the same district where she grew up. One of her students, Kira Koch, told the local paper that she enjoys going to school because she knows Ms. Bittner will always be there to support her. |
